Custom Library Built-ins
A prior client of Borders Woodworks contacted us for a new custom woodworking project. They wanted us to design, build, and install a pair of custom library built-in bookcases in their home.
After getting a general idea of what our client wanted, we created sketches of our design and made some color and material suggestions.
Borders Woodworks handled every aspect of the design, including picking light fixtures and cabinet hardware that complimented the cabinet details. We worked with the client’s electrician to insure that the rough in for the lighting was in the correct location and a light switch for the room was relocated out of the way of the bookcase.
- The ladder, countertops, and ladder rail trim were made of cherry wood with a reddish brown stain.
- The poplar and maple cabinets were painted light gray satin lacquer for a durable finish. A little variation adds even more visual interest to the project; one bookcase is 9′ tall and the other is 10′ tall. The reason for this is that two ladder systems in this room would take up too much floor space and not allow room for a future work table in the middle.
- As part of the project, we also added crown molding around the entire room, which looks nice and further improves the value of our client’s home.
On each project, a Borders Woodworks touchstone is to be minimally invasive to our clients’ daily lives in their home or office (as appropriate to the project). After we constructed the built-ins in our San Marco workshop, we delivered the project components in one day. We came back and installed everything on another day. For the last step, I went back one time for a few hours to complete the trim work and caulking.
Our client was very pleased with the appearance and quality of her completed woodworking project, and we enjoy meeting and exceeding our clients expectations even more than we like working with wood; and that’s a lot!
